Navigating the Pandemic: Unveiling the Impact of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions and Vaccines

The Institute for Pandemics (IfP) presented a webinar to discuss the impact of both non-pharmaceutical (NPI) interventions and vaccine uptake in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Paul Grootendorst (Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy) provided a descriptive overview of the provincial pandemic responses and mortality and economic outcomes. Following his presentation, there was a panel discussion with researchers that have recently published evidence on the causal impact of NPI and vaccine uptake on mortality outcomes in Canada.

About the Presenter

Paul Grootendorst is an associate professor in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy; an adjunct associate professor in the Department of EconomicsMcMaster University; Past President, Canadian Health Economics Association; a Fellow, WHO Collaborating Centre for Governance, Transparency & Accountability in the Pharmaceutical Sector; and a Faculty Associate, Canadian Centre for Health Economics.  His research interests are the economic aspects of the pharmaceutical industry, including drug development; pharmaceuticals use, insurance and reimbursement; and interactions between innovative (brand) and generic drug firms and methods for program evaluation using observational data.

About the Panelists

Mehdi Ammi, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he is also the PhD in Public Policy program supervisor. His research explores issues related to the determinants and effects of the organization and financing of healthcare services and of public health systems in high-income countries. Dr. Ammi is committed to connect research and policy, and he actively involves health policy makers, health system managers and clinicians in his research projects. Dr. Ammi is currently the Past-President of the Canadian Health Economics Association, and a Regional Director of the International Health Economics Association.

Alexander Meek is a PhD candidate in economics at the University of Guelph. His research focuses on the interaction between Public Policy and Health. Alex’s recent work includes investigating non-pharmaceutical interventions on the death rates of COVID-19 in Canada and investigating the operational structure of LTC homes in Ontario during the pandemic.

Sharifa Nasreen, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Dr. Nasreen is a medical epidemiologist with extensive public health research experience in low- and high-income country settings. Her research focuses on epidemiology of diseases of public health importance, primarily infectious diseases, including vaccine-preventable diseases. She also served as an External Expert Member of the Pediatric Pneumococcal Working Group of the Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization.
